The Five Domains

Throughout this learning kete tamariki will be learning about their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others, both human and non-human animals. Tamariki will develop a greater understanding of the key contributors of physical and mental wellbeing by exploring Te Whare Tapa Whā, Dr Mason Durie’s Māori model of hauora (wellbeing), and The Five Domains Model, an animal welfare guide used by SPCA to ensure animals have good welfare.

It is important for tamariki to develop greater awareness of themselves and what contributes 
to their health, happiness and overall wellbeing. Throughout these learning experiences tamariki will be introduced to Te Whare Tapa Whā, Dr Mason Durie’s Māori model of hauora (wellbeing), and will be learning to identify and understand their own needs. Tamariki will then be introduced to The Five Domains, an animal welfare model used to guide the way we care for animals and ensure they have good welfare. Tamariki will explore the needs of non-human animals and will compare and contrast the needs of human and non-human animals.

Good Nutrition

Good Nutrition


Just like it is for us, a nutritious and balanced diet is an important factor in ensuring healthy growth, development and maintenance of overall good health for animals. Throughout these learning experiences tamariki will be learning about the importance of food and water for all living creatures. They will be discovering the varying diets of different animals and what it means to be have good nutrition. Tamariki will learn where products originally come from, before they enter the supermarket, helping them to become conscious consumers. Tamariki will learn how to show kaitiakitanga, guardianship and protection towards the environment and all of its living creatures. During this experience tamariki will enjoy getting outside, planting and growing fruits and vegetables, planting native trees, observing manu (birds) and experiencing the cycle of life.

Good Environment

Good Environment


All animals should live in a good environment as the conditions and surroundings given to 
an animal contributes to their overall wellbeing. Throughout this learning experience tamariki will be exploring what it means to provide a good environment and what this may look like for different animals. Just as we do, animals need a place to shelter from the elements. Some animals need shelter to protect them from predators and others need somewhere soft, warm, comfortable and clean to sleep. Through these learning experiences tamariki will be considering what a good environment is for themselves and will compare this to good environments for a variety of non-human animals. Tamariki will learn how they can positively affect an animal’s welfare through providing a good environment.

Good Health

Good Health


Just as we should visit the doctor and dentist for annual check-ups, all animals should be seen by 
a veterinarian at least once a year for a health check-up and vaccinations. Through these learning experiences tamariki will be learning how to ensure animals are kept in good health. Tamariki will explore the important role veterinarians play in supporting animal health and welfare through dramatic play. Tamariki will then investigate litter, the threat it can pose to animal welfare and how they can make a positive difference in the fight against waste and the protection of wildlife.

Appropriate Behaviour

Appropriate Behaviour


All animals should be provided the opportunity to express their natural behaviours. 
Enough space, proper shelter and housing, enrichment and for some animal’s company of their own kind encourages the expression of natural behaviours. Throughout this experience tamariki will be learning about animal behaviour and how they can provide enrichment opportunities and an environment that encourages the expression of natural behaviour and enhances an animal’s quality of life. Tamariki will be asked to explore the world through the eyes of an animal, helping them to notice and recognise everyone and everything has different needs, likes, dislikes and experiences the world slightly differently. Tamariki will have the opportunity to work through the technological process behind product design and will be encouraged to show creativity and innovation.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental Wellbeing


All animals deserve to enjoy feelings and have experiences that positively impact on their overall mental wellbeing. Throughout these learning experiences tamariki will have the opportunity to explore, examine and develop a greater understanding of how their own feelings and emotions can be affected in both positive and negative ways, as too can the feelings and emotions of non-human animals.

Tamariki will explore the feeling of trust and its essential role within all relationships They will be learning how to prevent animals from feeling worried, frightened or stressed and ways to support an animal’s emotional wellbeing by providing opportunities for animals to express behaviours that are rewarding and elicit positive feelings, such as pleasure, interest, comfort and a sense of control.
